Behind the Scenes at the Screen Printing Studio

It's always so interesting to see how a finished product comes to life, to see the process and the method behind the finished article.
Having worked in the textile industry for over ten years i'm used to seeing the fabric print process and although very similar the hand paper print process is slightly different and it was a real treat to visit the printer I spent so long searching for when I first started Bobbie Print.
I was really fortunate to spend some time watching this season's new Winter Bear screen print come to life, the artwork had been finalised, the screen exposed and the colour mixed so I was there to see the final (and most exciting step!) the actual printing!

Through these photos you can see the exposed screen being positioned using the image acetate, checking that the paper is positioned in exactly the right place so that the image always appears in the same place on every separate prints.

Once everything is in position, it's time to print!  I chose a lovely shade of Flint grey for the Winter Bear which contrasts beautifully against the subtle off white paper.

I was amazed how clean the print studio was (if I had been doing the printing there would have been so much more mess!), but you can't print without an ink covered squeegee, but this is as messy as it got.

Pretty soon the prints were all in the drying rack, such a pleasure to watch this process and see a real craftsman at work, so much attention to detail and care goes into each print, it truly is a wonderful way to see my designs realised.
